NMITE, New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering

Hereford, UK

NMITE – is a breakthrough in UK higher education. With no precursor organisation or parent institution, the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) has independently built a pioneering educational experience from the ground up. NMITE was founded in Hereford to offer high quality degree level engineering education in a region of the UK historically starved of such opportunity. NMITE’s first students started in September 2021, and its first graduation ceremony was held in May 2025.

NMITE’s programmes, curriculum and pedagogy have been designed into and around the Block model from the beginning.

Key elements of NMITE’s approach to teaching in block include:

  • industry linked, challenge led learning;
  • substantial educator contact time;
  • varied assessment strategy related to professional formats;
  • Significant team-working and professional capabilities in the curriculum;
  • 9-5 studio environment for learning;
  • unusual entry requirements – with maths and physics A levels not required;
  • interdisciplinary to situate engineering in its context.
